Trump Says He Talked to Putin About Ending the Ukraine War

MOSCOW, Feb 9 (Reuters) – Former President Donald Trump says he has spoken on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine. This is the first time a U.S. president has had a direct call with Putin since early 2022, according to the New York Post.

What Trump Said

On Friday, Trump spoke aboard Air Force One. When asked how many times he had spoken with Putin, he replied, “better not say.” Still, he made one point clear:

“He (Putin) wants to see people stop dying.”

Trump called the war a “bloodbath” and said his team had some very good talks with Putin. He has long promised to end the war in Ukraine, but he did not give any details about his plan.

What the Kremlin Said

When asked about the report, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS, “many different communications are emerging.” He added, “I personally may not know something, be unaware of something. Therefore, in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny it.”
This is a common way for Kremlin officials to respond to such reports.

The Bigger Picture

The war in Ukraine has been going on since 2014. It began after Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution and Russia’s annexation of Crimea. In 2022, Putin sent thousands of troops into Ukraine. He called it a “special military operation” to protect Russian speakers and to stop Ukraine from joining NATO.

Ukraine and its Western allies see this as a land grab. Moscow now controls a large area of Ukraine. Fighting continues, and the conflict is far from over.

What Comes Next

Trump said he might meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy next week. According to Reuters, Zelenskiy wants Ukraine to give the U.S. rare earths and other minerals. In return, Ukraine would get more financial support for its war effort.

Trump has long claimed he has a good relationship with Putin. He says he has a plan to end the war. However, he did not share any more details about his plan.
